Global Cities Database Product Summary
Global Cities Database enables you to access information on over 2.5 million cities world wide. Integrating this database into your services will facilitate simple and accurate retrieval of geographic details including: distance between cities, latitude and longitude, and radius calculations. GCDB is a perfect solution for any application requiring distance calculation of cities, finding a list of cities within a specific radius from a central point, or to place points of cities in a custom mapping solution.
Global Cities Database Features
- Distance Calculator: This feature calculates the distances between locations based on country, first-order administrative divisions (states, regions, provinces, etc... depending on the country) and city, using the standard FIPS codes.
- Radius Search: This search gives names and location of all cities within any given radius of the target location.
- Coordinate Calculator: Our data allows you to incorporate graphical mapping functions into your own custom applications by defining geographic coordinates.
Global Cities Database Compatibility Requirements
All data in GCDB is encoded in ASCII and distributed in compressed CSV (Comma Separated Value) files, so you can use it with your database of choice.
- WinZip or similar PKzip archive extraction utility
- Database software application that can import 2.5 million records from a standard comma-delimited ASCII text file (MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server or other similar packages)
- Microsoft Excel, Access, notepad, or other similar text-editing utilities
Global Cities Database Benefits
Our pre-populated drop-down lists will solve all problems of misspelled and variant names, and will allow quick calculations without error. User imputed entries for any given location may vary greatly and create a database 10 or more times as big as the number of locations included within it.
